So as it turns out, the Dawn Birds symbol from yesterday’s post isn’t actually what my research request was for.

The date 1614 is when Captain John Smith came to the Isles of Shoals and drew the first good map of the area. He tried to name the islands Smith’s Isles, but fishermen living here had already named them the Isles of Shoals, so John’s name didn’t stick.
